A free online MMORPG: open it in your browser and play
Plenty of games call themselves a free MMORPG. The question worth asking is what exactly is free. In WarCrest Online the answer is short: every zone, all four classes, every level from 1 to 60, every quest, event and PvP mode. Nothing to download, nothing to install. Sign up, pick a side in the war between humans and orcs, and play in the same tab.
What is free? Nearly everything
WarCrest Online is a 3D MMORPG of two nations at war, played in a web browser. You pay nothing to get in, there is no subscription, and no level puts a wall in front of you. All of this is open from day one:
- Four classes: Warrior, Rogue, Mage and Priest, with five characters per account on every server.
- Every zone from level 1 to 60: Hearthmoor, the homelands of Valcrest and Gorzhak, the Colony Zone, the Umbral Rift and Morgard.
- Every quest and event: the daily quests in the Colony, the Crystal Clash, the Ancient Colossus, the Rift Gate and the War of Morgard.
- Everything social: parties, clans, a friends list, chat, trading and stalls.
The small costs that wear you down in free games are not here either. Your red and blue potions never run out and heal more as you level, so you never spend gold or gems on them. Dying never costs you your gear. Weapons and armor come from monsters, bosses and the blacksmith's anvil, and the store does not sell them.
No download: start in three steps
The game runs inside a web page and draws its 3D world with WebGL, the graphics technology already built into your browser. It takes no space on your disk and there are no patches to download: every update arrives the next time you open the page.
- Sign up with an email and a password. There is no guest play: an account for everyone keeps bots and throwaway accounts out of the economy. No credit card is asked for.
- Make a character: race (human or orc, which is also your nation), gender, class and a name.
- Enter the world. A loading screen builds the zone and you wake up in Emberfold, the town of Hearthmoor.
For your first hours read the beginner's guide. How the game runs in a browser and what it needs from your device is on the browser MMORPG page.
What you do in the game
Everyone starts together in neutral Hearthmoor, where nobody can attack another player. At level 10 humans go home to Valcrest and orcs to Gorzhak, and they level there up to 40. At level 40 the two nations meet in the Colony Zone, which is open PvP.
- Hunt and quest. Quests are taken and handed in from your quest log, so you never walk back to find whoever gave them.
- Collect gear and push it to +10. The blacksmith in Emberfold raises weapons and armor up to +10. From +3 on, a failed try destroys the item, so a high + takes real work.
- The Crystal Clash: six against six from level 20, twice a day at 14:00 and 22:00 Istanbul time.
- The War of Morgard: nation against nation every Wednesday and Saturday at 21:00. The winning nation keeps +5% XP, gold and drops until the next war.
- The Ancient Colossus: a world boss that rises in the Bowl of the Colony at 13:00, 19:00 and 22:00.
- Trade: face to face, or from a stall you open in town from level 10, which keeps selling after you log off.
Every class skill is in the class guide, and the PvP side has its own page: PvP and the war of nations.
What the store sells, plainly
The game is free and the Power Up Store pays for it. The store runs on gems. Gems are shared by every character on your account, and nothing you buy with them can be sold or traded to other players. This is everything it sells:
| Item | Gems | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Gold Premium (30 days) | 500 | +100% XP from monsters, +30% loot gold, +10% item drop chance, +5% National Points from player kills, gold picked up by itself, no XP lost when a monster kills you, and a place ahead in the server's line |
| Wings (30 days) | 500 | A look, +10% XP, +10% National Points, +10% gold |
| Cloaks (30 days) | 500 | A look, +10% XP, +10% gold, +5% item drop chance |
| Hand glows and armor skins (30 days) | 300 to 800 | Looks only, no stats |
| Market Scroll (30 days) | 300 | Search and buy from every stall of your nation on the server |
| Fortune Stone | 100 (900 for 10) | Raises the chance of one upgrade at the blacksmith, never to a certainty |
No point hiding it: the Fortune Stone is the one store item that touches power, because it helps upgrades. It never makes a step certain, so gold, scrolls and luck still decide. Gold Premium, wings and cloaks add no attack, defense or HP; they make you progress faster. The store has no weapons, armor or jewelry at all.
Gem packs hold 550, 1,200, 3,000 or 8,000 gems for $4.99, $9.99, $19.99 or $49.99 (players in Turkey pay 179, 349, 699 or 1,749 TL, see the Turkish MMORPG page). Buying gems needs a confirmed email; playing does not.
Rewards that cost nothing
- Welcome pack: the first character on a new account finds 10 of each Novice scroll in its bag: XP, gold, speed, HP, defense and attack.
- Login reward calendar: one reward a day for seven days. A missed day waits for you and the count never resets. Day 5 lends you a hand glow for a day, and day 7 adds a day of Gold Premium and an armor skin for a day.
- First week goals: in a new character's first seven days, steps like reaching a level, handing in quests, your first party, your first friend and your first upgrade pay out Novice scrolls.
- Invite a friend: when a friend who signed up with your invite link gets a character to level 10, you both get 5 Novice XP and 5 Novice Gold scrolls.
None of these rewards can be sold or traded, so making new accounts to farm them gains nothing. They are there for the people who play.
Free on your phone too
The same game opens in your phone's browser, with no app to install. Hold the phone in landscape: a joystick on the lower left, the attack button, skills and potions on the right. On Android the game goes full screen with a tap; on an iPhone, add it to your home screen from Safari's Share menu and it opens full screen. Phone players share the same servers and the same world with computer players. More on the mobile MMORPG page.
