A free browser MMORPG with nothing to download
WarCrest Online is a free MMORPG that runs in your web browser. There is nothing to download or install: make an account, pick a side in the war between humans and orcs, and you are playing in the same tab a minute later.
What is a browser MMORPG?
An MMORPG is an online role-playing game where many players share one persistent world. You make a character, fight monsters, gain levels and better gear, group up with other players and, in a game like this one, go to war against them. A browser MMORPG does all of that inside a web page. The game comes from the website itself, so there is no launcher, no installer and no store to go through.
WarCrest Online is a full 3D world, not a text or menu game. You walk across open zones, see other players and monsters around you in real time, and fight with skills on a bar. The game is in beta: it is open to everyone, and any reset is announced ahead.
Why there is nothing to download
The game draws its 3D world with WebGL, the graphics technology built into every modern browser, through the Babylon.js engine. Your browser already has everything the game needs. Getting started takes three steps:
- Sign up with your email and a password. Every player has an account, so there is no guest play.
- Pick a server and make a character: race, gender, class and a name. Each account can have five characters on every server.
- Enter the world. A loading screen builds the zone and you are in the world.
Because the game is a web page, every update reaches you the next time you load it. There are no patches to download and nothing takes space on your disk.
What WarCrest Online offers
| Nations | Humans of Valcrest against orcs of Gorzhak |
| Classes | Warrior, Rogue, Mage, Priest |
| Levels | 1 to 60 |
| Groups | Parties of up to 6, clans of up to 30 |
| PvP | The Colony Zone from level 40, the Umbral Rift from 50, the War of Morgard twice a week |
| Price | Free, in the browser |
- Two nations. Your race is your nation for life. Everyone starts together in Emberfold, the town of Hearthmoor, a neutral land where nobody can attack another player. At level 10 you go home to Valcrest or Gorzhak and level there up to 40.
- Open PvP in the Colony. From level 40 both nations meet in the Colony Zone. Outside your base, anyone of the other nation is fair game. Every kill earns National Points, which rank you each month and of all time.
- A world boss. The Ancient Colossus rises in the Bowl at the heart of the Colony three times a day, and the whole server is warned before it does.
- The Umbral Rift. Twice a day a gate opens for players of level 50 and up into a dark PvP zone with stronger monsters that drop Riftstones.
- The War of Morgard. Every Wednesday and Saturday the two nations fight over Morgard. The first side to bring down the other's War Keeper wins a bonus for its whole nation until the next war.
- Gear and upgrades. Monsters drop weapons, armor and jewelry. The blacksmith raises weapons and armor up to +10, and every step past +3 can destroy the item, so a high + is something to be proud of.
- A player economy. Trade with other players face to face, or open a stall in town from level 10: it keeps selling while you play on or log off.
- Quests. Quests are taken and handed in from your quest log, with daily quests in the Colony for levels 41 to 59.
Every monster and item is listed in the game database.
Four classes
Each class has nine or ten skills that unlock as you level, and three stat points come with every level.
- Warrior: the tank. Stands in front, pulls monsters onto itself and hits one target hard.
- Rogue: a dagger assassin. Hides in the shadows, strikes from stealth and roots its target.
- Mage: ranged damage. Freezes enemies and burns whole groups with area spells from level 20.
- Priest: the healer. Keeps the party alive, clears poisons and slows, and can still fight.
The class guide lists every skill with the level it unlocks.
System requirements in plain terms
You need a current browser with WebGL: Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, on a computer, a tablet or a phone, and a steady internet connection. There is no fixed hardware list, because the game adapts to the device it runs on:
- Graphics: High, Medium or Low in the game menu. Lower is faster on weak devices.
- Frame rate: 30, 60 (the default) or Max. On the character screen, or while another window is in front, the game drops to 30 frames a second so a laptop stays cool.
- Adaptive resolution: when frames stay slow, the game draws at a lower resolution, one step at a time, and climbs back when there is room again. It never goes above your Graphics setting.
- Phones and tablets get a lighter picture on their own, with a shorter view distance.
- Connection: if the line drops, the game reconnects by itself as soon as the server answers.
Free to play: what the store sells
The whole game is free: every zone, class, level, quest, event and PvP mode. The Power Up Store sells looks and time savers for gems. No weapons or armor are sold: gear comes from monsters, bosses and the anvil. Gems are shared by every character on your account, and what you buy with them cannot be sold or traded.
| Item | What it does |
|---|---|
| Gold Premium (30 days) | +100% XP from monsters, +30% loot gold, +10% item drop chance, +5% NP from player kills, gold picked up by itself, no XP lost when a monster kills you, and a place ahead in the server's line |
| Wings (30 days) | A look on your back, +10% XP, +10% NP and +10% gold |
| Cloaks (30 days) | A look, +10% XP, +10% gold and +5% item drop chance |
| Hand glows and armor skins (30 days) | Looks only, no stats |
| Market Scroll (30 days) | Search and buy from every stall of your nation on the server |
| Fortune Stone | Raises the chance of one upgrade at the blacksmith, never to a certainty |
To be clear about it: the Fortune Stone is the one store item that touches power, because it helps upgrades. It never makes a step certain, so gold, scrolls and luck still decide. Free players also get a login reward calendar, first week goals and, on an account's first character, a starter pack of Novice scrolls.
