An MMORPG you play in your phone's browser

WarCrest Online is a 3D MMORPG that runs in the browser on your phone. There is no app to install: open the site, sign in, turn the phone sideways and play on the same servers and with the same characters as players on computers.

A mobile MMORPG without an app

The game is a web page, so your phone's browser is all you need: Safari on an iPhone, Chrome or another current browser on Android. It draws its world with WebGL, the graphics technology every modern browser carries. Nothing goes through an app store, nothing takes space on the phone, and every update arrives the next time you open the page.

It is the whole game, not a cut-down companion app. You fight, level, trade, join parties and clans, and go to war with the same world and the same rules as everyone else. Phones also get a lighter picture of their own and a shorter view distance, so the game keeps moving on a small device.

Getting started on your phone

  1. Open warcrestonline.com in your phone's browser and tap Play free.
  2. Create an account with your email and a password.
  3. Pick a server and make a character: race (your nation), gender, class and a name of 2 to 12 English letters or digits.
  4. Turn the phone sideways and enter the world. You start in Emberfold with your first quests in the quest log.

The first character of a new account also finds a starter pack in its bag: ten of each Novice scroll, for XP, loot gold, run speed, HP, defense and attack, an hour each.

Played in landscape

Phones play with the screen turned sideways. The home page, sign-in and server list work upright, but from the character screen on a phone or tablet held upright shows a note asking you to turn it to landscape. The game keeps running behind that note, so turning the phone for a moment never throws you out of a fight.

Phones have a layout of their own, made for a short, wide screen. On an iPhone with a notch, the player frame, the map and the fight buttons move out toward the corners so nothing sits under it.

Touch controls

The game switches to touch controls by itself the first time you touch the screen.

ControlWhat it does
Joystick (left side)Touch anywhere on the lower left and drag to run. It appears where your thumb lands.
Attack button (bottom right)Picks the nearest enemy if none is selected, runs to it and attacks, all in one tap.
Skill arcYour skills sit as round buttons in an arc around the attack button. Tap one to cast it on your target.
PotionsA red potion for HP and a blue one for MP, in a row beside the skill arc. They never run out.
CameraDrag on the screen to turn it, pinch with two fingers to zoom.
Loot and tipsTap a chest to open it. Tap an item to read its tooltip; it stays until you touch somewhere else.

Ground spells, which a computer aims with the mouse, are cast at your target or straight ahead on a touch screen. The bag, character, quests and other windows open from the buttons on the bar.

Full screen and the home screen

The same servers as computer players

There is one game for every device. Your account and your characters live on the server, not on the phone, so you can play an evening on your computer and carry on from your phone the next morning, right where you stopped. If you open a character on your phone while it is still in the game on the computer, the phone takes over once the computer has saved it.

Phone players and computer players meet in the same zones, parties, clans, markets and wars. Nobody is put on a separate server because of their device.

Notifications

The game can tell your phone when something worth coming back for happens. Turn them on in the game menu, under Notifications, and pick the ones you want:

Nothing is sent while you are in the game. On an iPhone, notifications work only in the game opened from your home screen.

Tips for playing on a phone

Phone tips
  • Add the game to your home screen: it opens full screen and is one tap away.
  • If the phone gets warm, set Frame rate to 30 and Graphics to Medium or Low in the game menu. The game also lowers its resolution by itself when frames get slow.
  • Use Wi-Fi for long sessions and big fights. A short drop is not the end: the server waits about half a minute, and the game reconnects on its own.
  • Let the attack button do the targeting in normal fights, and tap an enemy yourself when you need a particular one.
  • Put the skills you use most on the first slots of your bar so they sit closest to your thumb.
